Chapter Forty-Five
General Sun’s Home
Outside Beijing
“I am so honored," General Sun bowed before the display. "After all these years, for you to desire to visit my humble home is beyond anything I might have wished for. But I fear my home cannot do justice to your presence, my Chairman.”
“Oh my friend, it's I who am honored." The chairman offered a rare smile to General Sun. “And I feel remiss I've never taken the time to visit you, always demanding you come visit me. Especially when I think upon all the time and effort you've put into helping me and our great Republic. An old proverb says that the state of the nation is reflected in the home. I am certain that your humble home will prove that to be true.”
Sun took out one of the small terry cloth towels he kept in his desk drawer and wiped his forehead. He was usually in his bedroom by this time of the evening, but a call from the chairman made him run downstairs to his office. He felt a little ill at ease. He was not used to receiving compliments from the chairman, just orders. He bowed his head. “You are too kind, my esteemed Chairman. I will make all the preparations as needed. Would it be possible for me to host you a little bit later? That would allow me the time to take care of certain tasks so that my home will be in a manner befitting . . .”
The chairman shook his head, “I'm afraid not. You must know I abhor imposing on you this way, but my schedule is already challenging. I can only come visit you during the two-hour window we spoke of. I must humbly beg your apology for that, but it will be the only opportunity.” He stared at his display, awaiting Sun’s answer.
Sun bowed. “It's I who am humbled. With a schedule such as yours, you should take the time to visit me. The honor is far more than I deserve.”
The chairman smiled again. “I'm so glad we can do this. I do hope we can avoid having any media or other protocol issues while I'm visiting. I would prefer if it can be just a nice quiet, visit between old friends.”
Sun bowed again, and when he lifted his head, he saw the leader had cut the connection.
He took a deep breath and glanced quickly at his surroundings. Everything seemed to be in order. But the chairman had never mentioned the nature of his visit. Was he coming to give Sun some sort of recompense? He had been at the chairman's side for more than thirty years. During that entire time, he never visited the chairman’s home or had anything other than formal meetings with him. They had many personal chats in a variety offices over the years, but the discussions were always about politics or history and how they tied into the dreams and aspirations of the great man. Sun knew the leader was putting together a formidable plan for the Republic, even if Sun was not privy to it all.
